A new WOAS beat engine: BRECAN
The first of hopefully many engines you can swap in and out on a microSD card.
BRECAN bypasses all the internal synthesis of a standard WOAS and replaces it with breakbeat snippets plugged into aleatoric processes.
An experimental software flavour capable of randomised jungle, layered hip hop, dubbed breaks and distorted breakcore. This one is based on my ‘Bred Breaks’ experiment from last year, which you can find on YouTube, and is partially inspired by Spinscott’s jungle finger drumming.
The interface is slightly altered:
- Bend becomes sample rate, filtration and A or B group breaks.
- Swing becomes a triplet dub effect.
- Wavesnap becomes a push-to-make send button that routes stereo input audio to the dub engines.
There are 72 breakbeat slices at your fingertips, with an astronomically large 10327 possible combinations!
You can buy a preloaded microSD card or download the disk image and make your own using Balena Etcher. You will need a 4GB or larger card.
Replacing your WOAS beat engine:
- Disconnect all cables from your WOAS.
- Turn over the device, unscrew and remove the 8 screws on the back panel.
- Remove the back panel.
- Locate the SD card holder at the bottom of the circuit board.
- Press the SD card lightly to release it, trying not to touch the circuit board.
- Remove the SD card.
- Slot in the new SD card and push lightly to latch it in place.
- Replace the back panel and screws.
- Your WOAS is ready to use!
